Compress a video for Discord

Get game clips and recordings under Discord's upload limit so they play right in the chat. Nothing is uploaded, and there’s no account, watermark or limit.

  1. 1. Drop files
  2. 2. Adjust
  3. 3. Download
  • No upload. Processing happens on your device.
  • No limits. As many files as you like, free.
  • No watermark. Your files stay exactly yours.

How to compress a video for Discord with filetidy

  1. 1

Drop your clip on the page or tap to choose it. Recordings from OBS, the Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays and phones all work.

  2. 2

Under “Target size”, keep “Discord free (20 MB)”, or pick “Discord 10 MB (any account)” or “Nitro Basic (50 MB)” to match your account.

  3. 3

Leave “Max resolution” on Auto so long clips step down to 720p or 480p and stay sharp. Use “Remove audio” for silent gameplay to save room for the picture.

  4. 4

Press “Compress”, then Download the MP4 and drag it into your Discord channel or DM.

Discord's video upload limits

Discord caps the size of every file you attach. In August 2026 the limit for free accounts went up from 10 MB to 20 MB, and the mobile apps now check the size of the original file before any compression, the same way desktop does. Nitro Basic subscribers can send files up to 50 MB, and full Nitro allows much larger uploads.

When a file is over the limit, Discord refuses it and suggests upgrading. Because servers and friends may be on different clients, the 10 MB preset is a safe choice for files you'll post in several places, while 20 MB gives roughly twice the bitrate for the same clip.

Discord shows an inline player for MP4 files with H.264 video, so viewers can watch without downloading. filetidy always produces that format and puts the index at the start of the file, so playback starts immediately.

To leave a safety margin, the presets aim slightly under each limit: 19.5 MB for the 20 MB tier, 9.5 MB for 10 MB and 49 MB for Nitro Basic.

Other ways to do it

Windows

On Windows: record clips that are already small

  1. If you clip games with the Xbox Game Bar, open Settings > Gaming > Captures.
  2. Set Video frame rate to 30 fps and Video quality to Standard.
  3. Shorten the “Record what happened” length so clips stay brief.

Even at these settings a long clip can exceed Discord's free limit, so a quick compression before sharing is still handy.

Mac

On Mac: trim before you compress

  1. Open the recording in QuickTime Player and choose Edit > Trim.
  2. Drag the yellow handles to keep only the moment that matters, then click Trim.
  3. Choose File > Export As > 720p, and run the result through the compressor above if it is still over the limit.

Android

On Android: share a link instead of the file

  1. Upload the full video to your cloud storage app (for example Google Drive).
  2. Use the app's Share option to copy a link that anyone with the link can view.
  3. Paste the link in Discord. Viewers leave Discord to watch it, and there is no inline player.

Compress, trim or pay for Nitro?

Compression is the quickest fix for clips up to a minute or two: at 20 MB, a 30-second highlight gets around 5 Mbit/s, which looks crisp at 720p or even 1080p. Beyond a few minutes the bitrate per second gets thin, and fast games turn blocky.

Trimming beats compressing for long recordings. Cutting a five-minute recording down to the 40 seconds that matter keeps the quality high and makes the clip more likely to be watched.

Nitro Basic raises the limit to 50 MB, which mostly helps if you share long, high-motion clips every day. For an occasional clip, compressing is free and takes about as long as watching it.

For gameplay, 60 fps looks smoother but halves the data each frame gets. With small targets, Auto switches to 30 fps for you; text and HUD elements then stay readable.

Frequently asked questions

What is Discord's file size limit right now?

Free accounts can upload files up to 20 MB since Discord raised the limit from 10 MB in August 2026. Nitro Basic allows 50 MB per file and full Nitro allows much larger files.

Why does Discord still say my compressed file is too large?

Make sure the preset matches the account you upload from. If you're unsure which limit applies, use “Discord 10 MB (any account)”, which fits every tier. filetidy re-encodes a second time if the first result comes out over the target, so the downloaded file is always under the size you chose.

How long can a video be to fit in 20 MB?

Roughly one minute at good 720p quality, or two to three minutes at 480p. Quiet, static footage fits more; fast games with lots of motion need more bitrate. The estimate next to each file updates as you change options.

Will my clip play inside Discord or only as a download?

The output is a standard MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which Discord plays inline on desktop, web and mobile.

Should I remove the audio?

If the clip has no voice or important sound, yes: audio takes up to 128 kbps, which at small targets is a noticeable share of the budget. With “Remove audio” ticked, all of it goes to the picture.

Are my game clips uploaded to filetidy?

No. The clip is compressed by your browser on your own computer or phone. The only upload is the one you do yourself, to Discord.
