How to compress a video for WhatsApp with filetidy

  1. 1

Open this page on your phone or computer and add the video: tap to choose it from your gallery or files, or drop it on the page.

  2. 2

Under “Target size”, keep “WhatsApp (16 MB)” for quick sending, or choose “WhatsApp, larger (64 MB)” for longer clips.

  3. 3

Keep “Max resolution” on Auto. It chooses the sharpest size the budget allows, usually 720p for short clips.

  4. 4

Press “Compress”, tap Download when it's done, then attach the new MP4 in WhatsApp.

How WhatsApp handles videos

WhatsApp treats videos in two ways. Sent from the gallery, a video is re-encoded by the app to save data, which often makes it noticeably softer. Sent as a document, the file goes through unchanged, and since 2022 WhatsApp allows documents of up to 2 GB.

Compressing the video yourself first gets you the best of both. You decide the size and resolution, the clip uploads quickly on mobile data, and the person you send it to gets a sharp video that plays directly in the chat.

The “WhatsApp (16 MB)” preset uses 16 MB, the figure long quoted as WhatsApp's media limit, which still sends in seconds. A one-minute video at 16 MB gets about 2 Mbit/s, enough for clean 720p on a phone screen. For longer clips, the 64 MB preset keeps quality up without making the upload a chore.

Other ways to do it

iPhone & iPad

On iPhone: send in HD or as a document

  1. In a chat, tap + and choose Photos & Video Library, then select the video.
  2. Before sending, tap HD at the top if it is shown, to send at higher quality instead of the standard compression.
  3. To send the original file untouched, tap + > Document > Choose Photo or Video instead. Documents can be up to 2 GB.

A video sent as a document arrives as a file to download rather than playing in the chat bubble, and it can take a long time on mobile data.

Android

On Android: choose the media upload quality

  1. Open WhatsApp > Settings > Storage and data > Media upload quality.
  2. Choose HD quality to make WhatsApp compress your videos less, or Standard quality to send them faster.
  3. To send a file without any compression, tap the paperclip in a chat, choose Document and pick the video from your files.

Windows

On WhatsApp for Windows or the web

  1. Drag the compressed MP4 from your Downloads folder into the open chat.
  2. Add a caption if you like and press Enter to send.
  3. Large files take longer to upload from a computer too, so compressing first saves time on both ends.

Send as video, in HD, or as a document?

A normal video message is the most convenient: it plays in the chat and the recipient can forward it easily. Its drawback is WhatsApp's own compression, which you don't control.

HD sends more detail but bigger files, which can be slow or expensive on mobile data for both you and the recipient.

A document keeps the original perfectly but is often hundreds of megabytes for a phone video, and it appears as a file attachment instead of a playable bubble on some devices.

Compressing to 16 MB or 64 MB here and then sending as a normal video is a good middle ground: small enough to send quickly, and already compact enough that WhatsApp's own processing has far less to strip away.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum video size on WhatsApp?

Files sent as documents can be up to 2 GB. Videos sent from the gallery are compressed by WhatsApp before sending, and very large ones can take a long time or fail on slow connections, which is why a compact file of 16 to 64 MB is the practical choice.

Why do my videos look blurry after sending them on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp re-encodes gallery videos at a low bitrate to save data. You can choose HD before sending, change the media upload quality in Settings, or compress the video yourself first so you control the quality.

Can I use this for WhatsApp Status?

Yes. Status videos are short, so the 16 MB preset is plenty. Long videos are limited by WhatsApp's Status length rules, so trim them to the moment you want to share.

Does this work on my phone?

Yes, in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. Keep the page open while it works; phones may pause background tabs. For long 4K videos, a computer is faster and has more memory.

Is my video private?

Yes. The video never leaves your phone or computer: it is compressed inside your browser and saved to your device. WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption then protects it in the chat.

Which format should I send?

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which is what filetidy produces. It plays on every phone WhatsApp supports, so there's no conversion delay on the recipient's side.
